Abstract: The petrogeochemical characteristics of sandstone can indicate the source of clastic material, and the provenance study will beneficiate the understanding of basin evolution and metallogenic process. By means of microscopic analysis, heavy mineral identification and petrogeochemical analysis, the sandstones from the lower submember, lower member of Zhilou formation in the northern of Ordos Basin were studied to determine the petrological, mineralogical and petrogeochemical characteristics as well as the their provenance feature. The results showed that the sandstone of the target layer in the study area is dominated by near source sedimentary lithic sandstone, and the principal element characteristics are similar to those of the active continental margin sandstone. The parent rocks of the sandstone are mainly located in the subduction zone of the active continental margin. Results of microscopic identification and heavy mineral analysis showed that the source rocks are intermediate acid magmatic and metamorphic rocks. By comparing the REE pattern of the sandstone to that of the provenance rocks, it was found that the parent rocks of the sandstone are mainly Precambrian korzite, gneiss, and diorite as well as Hercynian Indosinian gabbro and granodiorite The uranium content in intermediate acid rocks and metamorphic rocks is high, which provided a certain amount of uranium source for uranium pre-concentration in the sedimentary stage.
